Fax from a Mac

How do I fax a PDF from my Mac? When I try to access my fax modem, I only get options for my printer. I have OS X Yosemite.

You were right to start out your attempt by going to File > Print. The PDF should have a drop-down menu of multiple options. If you have a printer that also functions as a fax machine, you just may not be able to see all the options. Go to “Layout” to see if there are other capabilities that you can use, which should include faxing. If it doesn’t show up, make sure that fax utility is an enabled option through your fax machine.

If that still doesn’t work, then there might be some confusion about what a fax modem actually does for your faxing capabilities. If you have a modem instead of a fax machine (or a faxing printer), you may not be plugged into a landline. In that case, you would need an online fax plan. Online fax services offer sending services or monthly plans for receiving and sending faxes. Once you have an account (which will grant you an email address), that should become an option in your drop-down menu. If not, you can send faxes through the email account the service provides you with.
