It’s getting expensive paying Vonage and not making calls. Will MagicJack work the same way?

I only want to send and receive faxes. I don’t need to make or receive phone calls. I have Vonage right now, which I used to use for my home phone, but now I have my cell and I have the fax hooked up directly to the Vonage phone line. I use this for my volunteer work and it’s getting expensive paying Vonage and not making calls. Will MagicJack work the same way?

Based on your needs, Vonage does seem to be overkill. MagicJack is a better alternative if you want to continuing using a VoIP service, as you’ll only pay $39.95 for the first year, then $19.95 for each additional year. And you wouldn’t be the only one using MagicJack for this purpose. Plenty of people send and receive faxes with MagicJack without problems all the time, but it really depends on your fax machine. Some of them don’t do well over a VoIP line, and you might find that you’ll have to do some troubleshooting to get the system to work properly. Odds are it will work fine, but you’ll have to gamble that initial $39.95 to be sure.

You could avoid VoIP altogether and get an Internet fax service. You have many different options that could end up being less expensive in the long run, depending on how much faxing you’ll be doing. Check FaxPrices.com to compare fax services. Be sure to choose the “no voicemail” option, since you don’t need that. FaxPrices indicates there are several plans that cost about $7 or $8 a month, which is a good deal. But if keeping the cost as low as possible is the most important thing to you, MagicJack in tandem with your current fax machine will obviously be cheaper.
