Fax Machine Ringing, but No Fax

We randomly hear a sound as if a fax is coming through, however no fax actually comes. This is a Brother fax.

There are a couple of things that could be going on. It’s possible that your fax number has been confused with a phone number that has similar digits, which means that a connection is being made through the phone line but there’s no fax to receive. If that’s the case, the fax machine will beep on the sender’s end, letting them know that they’ve dialed incorrectly and hang up on them.

Other people who have a Brother Multi-Function Printer (MFP) have encountered issues where the fax machine rings because of a legitimate incoming fax, but nothing gets printed from the machine. If this is the case, the manufacturer recommends ignoring the default settings and setting the number of rings to zero. This means that the fax machine will no longer ring before accepting and printing faxes, and it may bypass the issue.
